Major, and even minor characters from one story arc often appear in other stories, making the Discworld even more alive and real to the reader. However, some books can be seen as parts of bigger story arcs, dealing with the same main characters or events. Each book in the series stands alone as a completed, independent story. The series is a parody of the popular fantasy genre and a platform for rather satirical parallels between the former’s most common tropes and contemporary social, cultural, religious, political and scientific issues. This is a comic fantasy books series, set on the fictional Discworld, a flat disc-shaped world set on the backs of four elephants which in turn stand on the back of the Great A’Tuin - a giant space-faring turtle. The publisher took interest, and so “The carpet people” appeared in Two science fiction novels followed – “The dark side of the sun” in 1976 and “Strata” in 1981.Ĥ Pratchett’s most popular work is the Discworld series, which comprises 41 main books and several companion books and guides. Pratchett ‘s breakthrough as a published novelist was somewhat accidental. He married Lyn Purves – his first and only wife - in October He has a daughter - Rhianna Pratchett, also a writer.
His first career choice was journalism and he left school at 17 in 1965 to start working for a local newspaper. Pratchett however described himself as a "non-descript student" and credited his education to the Beaconsfield Public Library. At school he was an active member of the debating society and wrote stories for the school magazine. His early interests included radio and computers. Pratchett was born in Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, England, the only child of David and Eileen Pratchett. With over 85 million books sold in 37 languages he is one of the most popular writers of all time.
